never - never land

“Back home nothing waited for us.
We had left society behind when we departed our homes.”

“we drifted, we wander aimlessly. letting adventures find us.”

“Time did not matter, whether it was light or dark.”

“We had entered a different world.”

In January 2014, I encountered an intriguing group of long-term travelers who had settled in a community hostel. Captivated by the place, I decided to return for a three-month period in December 2014 to create a photography project about the backpackers that have had chosen to liv on an Island. In the initial month, there was a positive and motivated atmosphere, with a carefree approach to adventure. The inhabitants roamed aimlessly, playing their own music and riding on the back of pick-up trucks across the island. Dressing up, drinking, and dancing until sunrise created a sense of community that felt like a new family.

However, after a few weeks of successful integration and initial enthusiasm, the travel utopia gradually transformed into a kind of dystopia. In paradise, the residents tried to escape from their problems, turning to alcohol to numb their suffering, often finding themselves collapsed on the floors. They established rules and hierarchy. The hedonistic ethos of the group was fueled by self-destruction.

"Never - Never Land" evolved into a gonzo-style project, shedding light on the people, life, parties, and natural surroundings of a community on an island. The series aimed to challenge the romanticized notion of freedom in the backpacking world. "Never - Never Land" received features from VICE, Monopol, GUP, and De Morgen. An exclusive edition of 50 copies of the book was showcased in January 2016 at Gängeviertel, Hamburg, Germany. The book was available at The House Of Photography - Deichtorhallen Hamburg until it sold out
